Oma's Kitchen Newcastle, I love OMA

German Restaurant NewcastleThis Cafe is dedicated to my ‘Oma’ who taught me to cook. My love of cooking has lead me to cook and share with you traditional German food.

COOKING with heart is at the core of Newcastle’s Bavarian eatery Oma’s Kitchen. Owners Mark and Cathy Fren serve lovingly prepared food made using recipes handed down from Cathy’s German grandmother, who ran a guesthouse near the German border with Austria.
But the family touches don’t end there – on any given day Cathy’s mother, two aunties or the couple’s two children can be
found working away in the kitchen or front of house at the Watt Street establishment.

Cathy’s German gingerbread and shortbread are favourites with the farmers’ market crowd and their Amanti coffee, baked German cheesecake and meals are already attracting a crowd of regulars in the CBD. ‘‘The menu is really tasty and fresh because that’s the way food is from where my family comes from in Germany near the Alps,’’ Cathy said.

‘‘We use local produce, a lot of which comes from the farmers market – we like to support other stall holders. We also serve Sobels Wines, which is a Hunter Valley family business.’’ Dishes on offer at Oma’s include German sausages (Weisswurst or Kransky) with sides including fresh baked bread, sauerkraut, mashed potato or red cabbage; goulash with bread dumplings; and vegetarian quark patties with red cabbage and tossed salad. There is also bread baked fresh daily, a selection of sandwiches and sweet tooths will not be
disappointed by the treats on offer, including the must-try baked German cheesecake, Bavarian apple cake, Linzer Torte (apple and raspberry tart) and chocolate cake.
Best German meal I've had outside Germany!     ~ Blake W
